The Difference Between Target and Interest Keywords

  • SPP Reply

I am setting up my first campaign and beginning to add the keywords, but I am stuck.

What is an "Interest" keyword and what is a "Topic" keyword? There is no explanation of the difference between these two in the dashboard.

If I select "Interest" keyword for a deep link, does that mean you will never use the exact keyword in the anchor when linking to that page?

If I choose target keyword, does that mean you will always use the exact match anchor text for that landing page/deep link?

Additionally, there is a section under Target Keywords called "Topic Keywords" and asking me to add topic keywords, but for what reason? What does Hubshout view as a topic keyword and how to you intend to use it? I mean, I can assume it is for ideas for what to write about, but a clear explanation of how you will use it would be appreciated.

    Hey Jason

    Thanks for your reply.

I would love to attend, but that would be 4am my time. I wake up at 8am. I can be available at 9am EST for training tomorrow.

If that's not possible, please reply here with the answers to my questions on the forum. I have a campaign that is sitting there without keywords because I want to know the differences between the options before I begin setting everything up.

Answer: If you choose interest for a deep link, that means we wont use that word at all (since we do not build content around/with interest keywords). If you choose target, then you are correct in your assumptions

Another great question. Topic keywords are there to diversify anchor text as well as keyword density on a page. Topic keywords tend to be more long tail and fit easier into a sentence. It also gives the writer a little more detail and insight into what they are writing about

These are some great questions. I believe Andy has addressed Interest vs. Target KW's. I will address the rest within the quote in bold to the best of my ability.

Please let me know if I can answer any of these with more clarity.

    Thanks Adam and Jason

    Additional questions:

    1. I have the campaign set to "Keyword Anchor Text Ratio: 50%" so does that mean even if I choose "Target" for the keyword, you will still only use it 50% of the time?

This is what I want BTW. The reason I was reluctant to choose "Target" is that I don't want the exact keyword to be overused and for me to have to manually come back in and change each one to "Interest" for my clients in a couple of months to avoid the incoming anchor text being over-optimized.

    2. If I choose "Interest" what types of anchor text will you use? I am assuming they would be related anchor text, generic, plain URL? Please verify what types of anchor text will be used specifically.

    Thanks

Adam, regarding your answer “If you choose interest for a deep link, that means we wont use that word at all (since we do not build content around/with interest keywords)”

Okay thanks. So, what is the purpose of interest keywords then? I’m not sure why I should be spending time putting them in there if they aren’t even used! :)

Let me ask it this way…

Hypothetical example: Target and Interest Keywords

    Client: Example.com
    Landing pages:

    1. Example.com
    2. Example.com/happy-home.html
    3. Example.com/safe-home.html
    4. Example.com/home-furniture.html
    5. Example.com/home-security-services.html

If the client wants to rank for the target terms of each landing page (e.g. happy home for the landing page Example.com/happy-home.html), should I select the “Target” keyword as “Happy home” and then just leave it at that? Will Hubshout automatically diversify the anchor text by using exact match anchor text, related anchor text, generic, plain URL, etc?

If I select “Interest” for the keywords instead of selecting target keywords for the campaign - what will happen then? Will the client be able to rank for the target term of the landing page (e.g. happy home) by using an “Interest” keyword? If not, please explain the exact purpose of “Interest” keywords and when to use them.

If the client wants to rank for “Happy home” at the landing page Example.com/happy-home.html does that mean I enter a target keyword of “happy home” and then a bunch of interest keywords? Do I even need to include interest keywords?

    Confused.

P.S. Hubshout is an AWESOME system and there is great support here. It's the most professional SEO reseller company out there. The reason for my questions: I am just a reseller who wants to run a tight ship, ensure that I can do my job effectively for my clients and provide accurate answers to their questions. At this point, I am still setting up the first campaign because I don't know how to properly list out the landing pages/deep links with keywords in the way I am supposed to be doing it.
