Google "Hummingbird" Update - a month old already!

  • Return On Now Reply

Google held an event at the house where the company started up today to celebrate their 15th anniversary.

Of course, nothing like announcing the biggest update to their algorithms since Caffeine in 2010 during the event.

    Check it out for yourself:

Looks like it impacts 90% of searches worldwide. Big update, indeed. But this is part of Google's vision to improve the user experience and provide more relevant and useful results.

Although Google hasn't revealed much about the specifics,
TechCrunch said the new algo allows "...Google to more quickly parse full questions (as opposed to parsing searches word-by-word), and to identify and rank answers to those questions from the content they’ve indexed."

Senior VP Amit Singhal said it is the culmination of 15 years work.

Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land provides a pretty good FAQ about Hummingbird:

Big update, but one that has been out for a month yet. Also, the wrong engineer presented it -- this probably has more to do with search in general than SEO or webspam, judging by the lack of Cutts and relative paucity of ranking changes, as well as the notable lack of monochromaticity and furriness in hummingbirds.

And everyone watch out for Adam and Chad's Daily Brown Bag today. It will, of course, be on Hummingbird.

And for those of you wondering what to do -- Google has underscored the importance of original, quality, useful/relevant content. This will matter EVEN MORE now with the new algorithm. And many aspects of the old algorithm have been included in Hummingbird. The goal is to find the meaning behind the search string (not just matching words) to improve the user experience. After all, search itself has changed a lot and so too has the way people search.
