Watch the video for a more in depth explanation.

Hello, and welcome to our How To Optimize your SEO Thinking Video. I'm Chad Hill, and I'm joined by Adam Stetzer.

Hey, good afternoon, Chad. A lot of people are out searching how to seo optimize their website. And I think most people believe there's some magic bullet, secret sauce, list of instructions, and technical details that if they only just treat this tag just right, added the right thing to their website, found out that secret schema.org tag, their rankings would fly.

You and I have been in this business now for quite a long time. We've paid very close attention and talked to hundreds of clients. We know that's just not true. So let's help our viewers and adjust their thinking. Let's help them figure out how to SEO optimize their thinking and really get them on the right track here. What can we offer?

Great question. And I think the first thing that you would want to think about is identifying the demand. So if you're a business, and you're sitting there about to put pen to paper and talk about, write down all the content for your website, the first thing you want to think about is, what keywords are people using when they think about your business.

And there's a lot of tools out there that can help you do that. Things like the Google AdWords keyword tool is a great one to start with. But that's the first thing to get to is, what are those keywords?

So that's interesting. So the first app to SEO optimize your website is actually to think theoretically about how people would get to your website. In our training curriculum, we call this thinking like a search engine. And it really does revolve around keywords, because that's how search engines are optimized.

The other key point you just made there, and we talk about this all the time is, you cannot create demand for searches. So even though you as a business owner or a webmaster may think, this is the perfect way to find me, it may not be how people want to find you. So to to optimize seo you have to succumb to that existing demand because it's there, you've got to get in front of it.

Right. And the next thing to optimize seo is once you've identified those keywords and understand the demand, is to really think about, what can you do to answer the questions that people likely have when they're looking for that? So again, if you think like a search engine and you put yourself in the mind of someone who's actually at the keyboard typing in that keyword, what kinds of content and compelling information can you create that will answer those questions. And so that's the kind of stuff you need to be putting on your website rather than generic content and information that doesn't really answer those more detailed questions.

And I really like your step two Chad, because most people would say step two to SEO optimize your page is, you found those keywords from step one, and now you're just going to shove them everywhere on the page that you could find. But that's not what you said. You said think about those people coming in on those keywords and what they need to know, and serve that need. That makes you very useful.

Obviously as you do seo optimization, be smart and use these keywords that you know they're using to search for you on your page liberally. But the emphasis is on being useful, so that they'll find that content engaging. They might share it. They'll come back. It'll leave a footprint. All of these things that you really want.

Great point. And the next thing that you really want to start thinking about is that once you've identified the demand, you've created great answers and compelling information about those topics, the next thing you want to do is figure out how can you promote or syndicate similar ideas to other places on the web. Because earning links back to your website is one of the ways that you'll ultimately be able to bring more traffic to your website. But that always starts with then taking that information you have and finding places on the web where you can place that information and earn links back to your website.

And again, most people have read that SEO optimization ultimately has a lot to do with backlinks to your website. But I like how you positioned it. Again, don't put the cart in front of the horse. Go out there and syndicate. Think like a good marketer. Find ways to promote and talk about these great answers to these questions you have. That will naturally lead you into venues where you can share these ideas and earn backlinks back to your site, which again leaves that footprint that Google wants to see.

So in the end, SEO optimization is less about title tags and more about way of thinking to serve an existing demand, have great answers, and then syndicate it.

People think in language. Many people that learn a new language find themselves dreaming or daydreaming in that language. The same kinda process could happen when people learn how to SEO optimize everything. The more engrossed they get in it, the better they will do overtime. It is less about title tags, and more about meeting a demand. Amen!

I think when it comes to SEO people over think it. If you treat using SEO in your marketing strategy the same as a relationship ie: nurturing your website and catering to your potential customers wants it becomes much more simple.

I totally agree. I think people get caught up in all of the technical aspects of SEO without stopping to think about what it is that will bring customers to their page. Whether it is specific keywords or interesting content, that should be your first step. Thinking like the customer. All of the technical stuff is important, but should come later.

Interesting, relevant, useful content WITH specific keywords, organically incorporated. That can be a hard balance to maintain, but it's the best strategy to getting the SEO job done.

SEO is a long term strategy, think of it as an investment that may take a while to pay off, but when it does you can expect years of results and returns!
